The word fun comes to mind when you hear the word fiddle.  Violin players are well aware that the word fiddle is an informal reference to the violin.  However, the word fiddle used to be a reference to other stringed instruments such as the cello, erhu, lira or crwth.  All these instruments are stringed and a bow is used to produce sound.  It is believed that the word fiddle is of Germanic origins.  There was an earlier instrument than the violin.  It also had four strings but it came in different shapes and dimensions.
